Created within the framework of the trinational research project Clim’Ability Design, the “Reallabor Energie Oberrhein” aims to make a substantial contribution to the development and implementation of sustainable energy solutions and therefore to the sustainable transition of the Upper Rhine region.
For this purpose, actors from the private sector, research and the public sector are specifically networked in order to jointly develop solutions, test them in a real environment and, if successful, implement them. The Reallabor Energie is curated by the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland. The first test areas are the Klybeq transformation site in Basel, where the Reallabor is based, and the port of Birsfelden. Further test areas are to follow in the future.
The term energy is defined broadly, on the one hand because a holistic approach tends to allow unconventional solutions, and on the other hand so that the diverse needs of the regional players can be better integrated into a common vessel and synergies can be exploited. Currently, projects are being developed in the following thematic areas:
- Hydrogen in inland navigation
- Grey energy in construction
- Closed food cycles in urban areas
- Building with natural building materials
